A Little Scare!

Well, it's 2:45pm and Alexa has just had her first bath. Just after Noon today, the nurse came in and gave Alexa a hepatitis B shot. Of course she really didn't like that much. Once she stopped crying the nurse began preparations for her first bath. During the preparations, Alexa spit up and choked and stopped breathing. The nurse began desperately to suction here mouth and massage her to get breathing started again, but to no avail.

This is when Mom and Dad started to panic. Another nurse joined in and I was summoned to the hallway to secure more help as they administered oxygen. Alisha smartly engaged the "blue alert button" and in no less than 30 seconds there were about 15 nurses in our room. They wheeled her off quickly to the nursery while continuing to administer oxygen. Her breathing continued sporadicly for several more minutes. They put her under direct oxygen and then hooked her up to several monitors including a blood oxygen sensor attached to her foot. They called for a doctor who arrived about 10 minutes later, by that time she had stabilized her breathing pattern and oxygen levels and her color was much more normal. The doctor requested that the nurses flush her stomach to remove any potential choking hazards (mucous and blood).

I have to say, I felt rather helpless watching my daughter's blank stare while her body turned purple. All Alisha and I could say is that we were glad we were in the hospital and not a home. Alexa will be monitored closely to make sure this doesn't happen again. I don't think Mom and Dad could survive another scare!

She just finished eating and is sleeping soundly with Mom and Dad watching ever so closely!
